E-Learning Assistant
The E-Learning Unit is seeking to employ an E-Learning Assistant on a part-time basis to assist with a Closed Captioning pilot and with general E-Learning administrative tasks.
The work is expected to start in March and we anticipate that it will be completed by June 2016.
Background
The E-Learning Unit is working with the Disability and Dyslexia Services to pilot a closed captioning service, which will be available for all students within the module where the pilot is taking place.
The E-Learning Unit also needs assistance with administrative tasks for QMplus, the University’s online learning environment.
Main Duties
The post will work under the guidance of a member of the E-Learning team. Someone with good technical skills would be most suitable.
Duties are likely to include:
- Setting up computer equipment in a suitable location within the classroom, for the lecture that will be closed captioned (it is likely that this will be done for your own modules*)
- Informing students of the availability of the closed caption service
- Running Skype to connect with the captioner (an external person)
- Liaising with the closed caption team to ensure that they are familiar with any subject specific terms prior to the lecture
- Reporting on failures and anomalies
- Distributing surveys to students
- Transferring media files from QMplus to QMplus Media
Training will be provided.
Person specification
We are looking for someone with the following skills and attributes:
- Good technical ability – comfortable using computer software
- Ability to work autonomously – can balance workload and manage own time in order to meet deadlines
- Ability to exercise initiative
- Dedicated, reliable
- Good organisation skills
- Adapts quickly to changed circumstances, and seeks practical solutions
- Seeks and welcomes feedback, responds positively and implements lessons learned
- Attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- Knowledge of QMplus and Q-Review for lecture captures would be desirable
*For this pilot, it would be preferred if lectures being captioned are held in larger lecture theatres.
Students whose lectures are held in the larger lecture theatres and who are enrolled in at least 3 modules will be strong applicants.
Pay and hours
The post will be paid at a rate of £12.00 per hour. The number of hours you will be required to work will be negotiable and will depend on your particular availability, up to a maximum of 25 hours per week (20 hours for international students) during term time. It is expected that you will be doing the closed caption pilot work during your timetabled class schedule, and so hours of work for this will be dependent on when you have classes.
You will be required to complete work between March and June 2016. There are no minimum hours guaranteed.
