Enrolment/Access: How can I enable guest access on my course?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

For: StaffApplication: Administering your module , QMplusTagged: access

Note: This guide is relevant until mid-August 2022. Guidance relevant to the new QMplus theme will then be available here

Guests are defined as anyone who is not directly enrolled in your course area. These may be QMUL staff or students or they may be people with no affiliation to QMUL. By default course areas are set to prevent people who are not enrolled in your course from accessing your course area however you may wish to change this.
Please Note: If you enable Guest Access on your course, its content can be viewable by users who are not enrolled on the course area in QMplus, as well as by the general public browsing the internet, including via Google searches. Course leaders can set a password onto their course areas, this is not controlled by the E-Learning Unit.

1. To enable guest access, find the course which you wish this to apply for and expand the ‘Users’ options in the Settings block, then click on ‘Enrolment Methods’

2. You can now see the various enrolment methods which are available. To enable guest access, click on the cog icon next to the ‘Guest Access’ row:

3. A password can be created, to restrict the access to only those who has received the details. One can then save these changes and return to the course.

Remember: People do not log in as guests. If you enable guest access on your course, anyone will be able to enter your course area. Even if you have set a password, users can share that password to gain access. If you wish people to log in to QMplus to access your course, they must first have an account and you can manually enrol them onto your course area.

If you are not able to view the ‘Guest Access’ settings, you may need to enable guest access in the course ‘Enrolment Methods’. This requires course administrator access to enable. First select ‘Users‘ under ‘Course Administration’ and select ‘Enrolment Methods‘ from the menu. Under ‘Add Method’ select ‘Guest Access’ and wait for the page to refresh automatically. Once this process has been completed, follow the steps above to add guest access to your course area.
