E-Learning Support for Students over Christmas

The introduction of semester-based examinations this January has prompted us to provide extra support to students over the Christmas break. To ensure that students are able to access all their learning resources successfully, using various technologies, E-Learning Support will be available via the Helpdesk for the College Closure Days and the weekend of the 28/29th of December.

Please ensure that your staff and students are aware of this support provision and to send all inquiries via the Helpdesk, as tickets.

Any Q-Review recordings which have yet to be made available for the revision period should be released by the 13th of December so that students can use them over the Christmas break.

QMplus January Release

On Tuesday, 14th January 2020, between 7am-9am, we will be making some updates to QMplus. These will include a mix of bug fixes, maintenance chores and new features. For more information, see QMplus January 2020 Release. (Please keep checking this page as some developments are still in progress and will not be finalised for a couple more weeks.)

Quickly share a video with anyone

Do you ever need to quickly share a video with someone? Video files are large and so attachingthem to an email is not necessarily the way to go. What to do? There’s a really handy feature in QMplus Media, our institutional media server, which allows you to generate a shareable link for any of your videos which you can send to anyone you like. The person viewing the video doesn’t need to have an account on QMplus Media to view the video so it’s particularly handy when communicating with people outside the organisation. Read more to find out how to do this.

Q-Review ESS service to be discontinued

In June 2017 the recordings from the old ‘ESS’ Q-Review service were migrated to the new SaaSsolution. Recordings on the ESS service which users had linked to or embedded have continued to work, but as the ageing service is no longer supported, it cannot be migrated to a new server and must be ‘put to rest’. The good news is, all your content will be available on the SaaS system, so nothing will be lost. If you have any Q-Review links which begin with https://ess.q-review.qmul.ac.uk/ess/ echo/presentation… then these will need replacing with a URL which works. To find out how to embed/link to recordings, please see our guidance material and should you have any questions, please raise a Helpdesk ticket

Turnitin issues

Unfortunately we are getting reports of problems similar to those we have experienced in the past where students are presented with an error message from Turnitin when they submit an assignment. Please accept our apologies and rest assured that we are in almost daily communication with Turnitin support. This appears to be a problem almost unique to QMUL which makes it harder to resolve. We are currently testing an updated plugin on our UAT server and once we are satisfied with its performance we will install it on the live environment. For further advice, please raise a ticket or contact your local support.

Staff development opportunities in November

Workshops

  • Tuesday 10th December 10:30-12:30 – Getting Started with QMplus – a practical 2 hour session aimed at those new to our online learning environment or anyone who’d like a refresher.

Spaces on our workshops are limited, go to our course booking system to book yourself a place. Workshops take place in the E-Learning Studio, room 0.09 of the Scape East building.

Drop-in Sessions and Book a Learning Technologist

Drop-in sessions run every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-2 pm in the E-Learning Studio on the Mile End campus for any member of staff who needs help with the use of technology in their teaching. There’s no need to book, just turn up on the day and a member of the team will be available to help.

If you’d like to discuss something in more detail, appointments are available through our Book a Learning Technologist service. Book a one hour appointment with a member of the team to discuss your use of technology in more detail.
