Digital Accessibility pilots

17 December 2021 Posted in: Announcements, News By: Catherine Mclean

As per Digital Accessibility legislation, we need to ensure that all our teaching and learning materials are fully accessible. Following on from our initiatives towards Accessibility, QMUL is running pilots with two new systems to enable us to make our teaching content accessible.
  1. Caption.Ed is a captioning tool that automatically provides captions when played over any media, including Blackboard Collaborate. It also produces a written transcript which can be edited and downloaded. Providing captions to videos/live teaching ensures that our teaching is accessible to all students, but particularly those with a specific learning difference.
  2. Blackboard Ally plugs into QMplus and identifies and reports on content (files, resources, and activities) that could be inaccessible. It provides an accessibility score, and tools and guidance to convert or replace inaccessible content.

Please send an email to elearning@qmul.ac.uk if you are interested in joining us in these early stages or would like to be part of the pilots.

We will be providing more updates in the coming months.
