Turnitin’s Enhanced Similarity Report

10 July 2024 Posted in: News By: Rume Begum

As part of the QMplus upgrade, we have enabled the new similarity report for Turnitin. Users will now see the re-designed similarity report with an intuitive interface and match categorization panel, making it easier to interpret and use as a formative assessment tool to strengthen academic writing skills.

The similarity report has the following features:

  1. Go to Classic view – this will take you back to the feedback studio interface.
  2. Overall Similarity – this score shows the percentage of a student’s writing that is similar to other sources such as websites, journals and other student assignments.
  3. Match Groups – this provides a summary of any sources that have not been cited or quoted, missing quotation marks and missing citations that may require the academic’s attention. Also, it shows the percentage of the paper that has been correctly cited and quoted.
  4. Sources – this enables you to see the sources used in the student’s writing in more detail and allows you to select to see overlapping sources from the same text.
  5. Filters – these can be used to exclude citations, quotes and bibliographic references from the similarity score.
  6. Flags – these represent the inconsistencies that set the paper apart from a normal submission. They are used to see details of:
      • hidden text – this is when characters have been inserted in white
      • replaced characters – this is when characters in a paper have been replaced with similar characters in another alphabet

Below are two useful articles that provide more information about the new similarity report:

Important Notes:

  • No Grading in New Interface: Currently, the new similarity experience does not support entering grades or feedback.
  • Accessing Feedback Studio: To grade or provide feedback directly through Turnitin Feedback Studio, click the button in the top left corner of the page to return to the classic view. This will redirect you to the original Turnitin Feedback Studio.
