Alternative Formats proving popular

Blackboard Ally logoAs part of the rollout of Blackboard Ally – the tool in QMplus that checks if our content is accessible – we enabled Alternative Formats for students at the beginning of this academic year.

These alternative formats provide students with a range of conversion options, so that they can convert their learning material into more easily accessible media. Essentially meaning they can personalise their learning content depending on their study needs. The list of conversion options is as follows:

  • Tagged PDF – structured PDF for improved use with assistive technology
  • HTML – for viewing in the browser and on mobile devices
  • ePub – for reading as an e-book on an iPad and other e-book readers
  • Electronic braille – BRF version for consumption on electronic braile displays
  • Audio – MP3 version for listening
  • BeeLine Reader – enhanced version for easier and faster on-screen reading
  • Immersive Reader – aid reading comprehension and grammar skills. Internet required.

The use of these Alternative Formats is proving very popular. Since 1st September 2022, there have been over 31,000 downloads of alternative formats, across 1,308 course areas on QMplus. The most popular download is the HTML format, followed closely by the Tagged PDF format.
