Automated Transcripts and Caption service for Q-Review

We are very pleased to announce that an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) transcript and captioning service for Q-Review is now live! This feature allows staff to add captions quickly and easily to their lecture recordings and any media which is published to a Q-Review section, improving accessibility to all students, but especially those registered with DDS. Typically the service produces ASR transcripts which are 93-95% accurate, which can be made verbatim by making just a few changes via the transcript editor before the text is added as captions. Please read our guidance on how to effectively use the transcript editor and add captions to your recordings.

QMplus Summer Upgrade

As some of you are already aware, we are coming up to that time of year again. Below is information about the QMplus annual upgrade.

QMplus will be upgraded from Moodle 3.6 to Moodle 3.8 on Tuesday, 14th July 2020.

As in previous years, this will mean that there will be unavoidable disruption to normal service on the date of the upgrade. QMplus will be unavailable on the morning and possibly the early afternoon of the 14th of July, while the upgrade takes place. Once the newly upgraded QMplus is released, we will be closely monitor the site for the remainder of that week. Information about the QMplus upgrade is available on our 2020 QMplus upgrade webpage.

E-Learning ‘Show and Share’ Events

We are going to run a number of ‘show and share’ events in July and August, in which staff across the University will present their stories on what they did during lockdown for practical teaching such as lab work, fieldwork and computer-based work, which normally require face to face interactions and how they moved their activities online. Staff will share their successes as well as lessons learned and there will be open discussions afterwards.

More information is available here.

Creating engaging online content using Articulate 360

Jack Fox and staff in the Student Recruitment and Widening Participation Team recently borrowed The ELU’s license for Articulate 360 and created some fantastic, interactive online courses for prospective students who maybe interested in studying at QMUL. The courses are great exemplars of what is possible by using the software and Jack Fox has kindly provided some background information and things to consider, in a case study here, for those who maybe thinking of trying it out.

For those who would like to use the Articulate 360 software, please contact us in The ELU with dates of when you’d like access.

Due to the volume of work which we are fielding at the moment, we are having to pause scheduling more Book A Learning Technologist (BALT) sessions for the moment. We shall update via our website and the newsletter when we are able to resume these.
